Matt's Story

​​Matt had always wanted to travel and settle in the US. The fact that Cloud International already had a well-established business in the US really drew him to join the business. He joined the Leeds office back in 2017, originally recruiting for java development roles in the UK, and has gone from strength to strength in the last 5 years.

After working his way up to Principal Consultant and demonstrating his talent and passion for moving into new markets, Matt had the opportunity to join the Boston team in the US. He was arranging to make the move over to Boston in March 2020, and even took a trip over there to get a feel for the place and find potential new apartments. Just 1 week before a national lockdown was announced in the UK, Matt was in Boston, working with the team and searching for somewhere to live. Luckily, he made it back to the UK just before the borders closed and the whole of the UK went into lockdown.

During the pandemic, Matt worked US hours remotely from Leeds. On top of the stresses of the pandemic that everyone felt, working US hours was particularly tough. But Matt saw it as an opportunity to establish himself in the US market and adapt to the changing recruitment needs of his clients now that so many people were working from home.

“Working from home I was able to really concentrate on growing my business over in the US. The hours were hard to get used to at first but as everyone in the UK was working from home as well, due to the pandemic, I didn’t feel like I was missing out. Plus, we had regular Teams meetings with the guys in Boston, so I felt like I was part of the team, even though I was in the UK.” Matthew Doherty, Market Manager

As restrictions began to be lifted, Matt picked up where he left off and started looking for apartments again. Unfortunately, his visa was delayed due to COVID but when it was finally processed, he was soon on a flight to Boston, MA!

Cloud International helped Matt with his flights and the costs associated with relocation. The team even helped him find an apartment and get settled in his new city.

Since moving over to the US, Matt has really made his mark on the team and has recently been promoted to Market Manager. His goals now are to build out his team and continue to grow in the US market.

“I love the lifestyle over here. It’s really chilled out but there’s so much to do.”
